The 2024 edition is confirmed for 5th to 6th October  – offering an opportunity to encounter a world of independent eyewear in an intimate setting on the spectacular West Coast

LOFT will return to San Francisco’s Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture at Gallery 308 this autumn. This historic venue is set in the Northern Marina District of the city by Fishermans Wharf and features expansive views of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. Surrounded by parkland, the Fort Mason Center is a vibrant cultural hub located within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

We really love coming back to San Francisco, said Richard Mewha, founder of LOFT Eyewear Shows. “Fort Mason is always a spectacular venue. The views alone make this a very special event. We encourage vendors new and old to make this a must-see event on the eyewear show calendar. Change is in the air and intimate events like this are becoming much more preferable for many of our clients.

LOFT Eyewear Shows are the premier independent luxury eyewear events held annually in New York City and San Francisco. Since 2000, the LOFT events have showcased exclusive and cutting edge designers from around the world.

Pioneering this event in San Francisco has always been a pleasure. There is a growing appetite for independent eyewear shows and this event is steadily growing in popularity, said LOFT Marketing Director, Louis Fullagar. On the back of the major announcement of our plans to remain in New York, we acknowledge our vendors and their customers are keen for shows like this that have a completely different and relaxed vibe to major conference-type traditional events of the past.

This years San Francisco event will take place over the weekend of 5th to 6th October and will be open from 11.00am – 8.00pm on Saturday, and 9.00am – 6.00 pm on Sunday. There is parking available at the venue and in the surrounding area. As usual there will be a barista, wine tasting, catering and afternoon beverages each day. Find out more about Loft San Francisco at www.lofteyewearshow.com / Eyestylist.com is a media partner for LOFT Eyewear Shows.

Milan Design Week artist preview: MoscaPartners will present Corridoio by Nathalie Du Pasquier – art and design join forces in a site-specific installation for the entrance of Design Variations 2024

From 15th to 21st April 2024 MoscaPartners will welcome visitors to Design Variations 2024 with the site-specific installation Corridoio by the French, naturalized Italian, artist Nathalie Du Pasquier at the entrance to the 2,500m2space of the ex-garage in Viale Gorizia 14 at the heart of Milan’s Darsena area.

The artist has created a work especially for the entrance corridor made up of twelve large, decorative panels printed on MEG. This versatile material produced by Abet Laminati is resistant to light and harsh weather conditions making it perfect for outdoor use and the building sector. The installation, which was designed specifically for this location, will create a boldly graphic tunnel with vivid colour contrasts that will guide the visitor into an imaginary world. Like previous editions, the artwork will not be limited to Milan Design Week but will be given a second life to ensure the continuity and dissemination of art through sustainable projects.

About Nathalie Du Pasquier – Nathalie Du Pasquier was born in Bordeaux (France) in 1957 and she has lived in Milan since 1979. Until 1986 she worked as a designer and was a founder member of Memphis. Davide Monaldi has created an installation in the Kuboraum Flagship Store in Milan

Created to coincide with the Mido event in Milan, Kuboraum have curated a new installation in their flagship store, in collaboration with the Milan-based artist Davide Monaldi. Monaldi works primarily in ceramics, a material that belongs to the Italian artisan tradition and that requires much time and dedication as an art form. His sculptures and installations originate from the need to tell a story about his own life through the objects that surrounds him.

Kuboraum Milan: an installation by Davide Monaldi

“Challenging the banality of the ordinary Monaldi represents everyday objects with a hyper-realistic approach, in turn elevating and dignifying them. With subtle irony he reflects upon the evils of contemporary men, resulting often in little perversions. A thread of melancholy runs throughout his colourful and playful sculptures, sometimes also autobiographical, or giving a picture of today’s society, but never in a judgmental way…..” To find out more about the artist, visit  https://www.davidemonaldi.com/

A film on color by Ørgreen Optics is launched by the Danish company today, via www.orgreenoptics.com and www.eyestylist.com Created in Copenhagen, the film follows the reflections of Sahra Lysell, long-term Color Advisor at Ørgreen Optics – interviewed by Clodagh Norton / Eyestylist.com, – Petra Kleis, Photographer and Allan R Kruse, Creative Director.

The film tells each of the interviewee’s personal experiences, memories, and colour influences as well as exploring their ideas on using colors in their work. Lysell, who has worked as the color specialist at Ørgreen since 1997, is one-of-a kind in terms of her specialism in developing color palettes in the optical industry. In the films she discusses approaches to color in the field of eyewear citing examples of how she combines specific colours to create a particular look or transforms colors which have a particular association into something new and fresh – combining them with different tones or hues. Lysell also explains many of the far-reaching personal and cultural influences she feels have impacted her views on color and wearing color, through her career, some of which continue to influence her eyewear palettes today. Above: new styles were released in the very contemporary HAVN collection last week: demonstrating the “flowing colour palette” at the Danish brand

“I live in a city where you apply color to walls, to old buildings… I live in a very historical part of the town,” she explains about her home in Copenhagen. “That tells a lot of story actually through color….”

In the film Lysell also explains how on-trend color palettes and iconic ‘classical’ tones have evolved through the years at Ørgreen, often coexisting in combination, and irrespective of color trends in other disciplines.

Petra Kleis – a photographer based in Copenhagen  – provides insights into a photographer’s relationship with color stories. “I really like the 3-dimensional feeling that colour can give you, and the softness,” she notes. “I use color a lot but it’s really rare that I ask why I use this colour and not that colour.” Allan R. Cruse, Creative Director reflects on topics such as early colour influences in childhood, and his area of expertise, branding, core values and how a colour language relates to and represents an important element of our vision of the world. The design is minimalistic, with the shades of light blue, pink and white evoking the calming colours of sunny beaches and relaxing landscapes. The sunglasses – Adam and Alba – conceived with Andy Wolf, offer summery tonalities – pink, gold and sand brown – ideal for a tanned complexion gifted by the rays of summer days. The shapes echo those of the ceramics: one of the models is rounder, resembling again the movement of waves, while the other is more square.

Andy Wolf x Motel a Miio – the handmade ceramics brand from Portugal

Deliberately placed facets give the sunglasses depth and 3-dimensionality – Adam has a subtle, slightly slanted inner facet all around the lens, reminiscent of the edge of a tablet. The model Alba (pictured below), in contrast, has a deep facet and a material thickness of 10 mm acetate, making it the “ideal” partner of the deep ceramic vase.

Promotional videos for the pieces confirm the “nature-inspired’ vision, as two tanned models wander freely on an idyllic beach. The creations, given their minimalistic style and essential aesthetic, are very versatile: the plate and vase would fit with any  setting and would immediately imbue a relaxing feeling in the surroundings, while the sunglasses are in tune with all genders and face shapes, in simple colours that feel luminous and modern. The sunglasses are produced in a limited edition of just 500 pieces per colour and style. Find out more at Motel a Miio – www.motelamiio.com  and Andy Wolf – www.andy-wolf.com

INTRO / Frames Forward

INTRO announces their Athens eyewear event which takes place on 22nd to 24th January 2022 – this weekend! 10 eyewear brands including fabulous Lapima, as well as John Dalia and Lesca will be participating at the Blind Beggar lounge, a fashionable cocktail lounge in the centre of the city. The event will be held as trade only – for independent opticians with an interest in seeing new releases from high-quality and  established and emerging labels – unique collections that are inspiring and beautifully made.

Event co-organiser Maria Angeloudi told Eyestylist the show will be organized in a creative way that will highlight the collections and communicate them through a social gathering in a pleasant and cool Athens hot spot.

In the climate of pandemic and travel disruption, small events with an intimate aspect that ensure opticians can see collections close up continue to be an ongoing trend. INTRO was launched by female entrepeneurs Maria Angeloudi and Natalia Klimi in 2020. We look forward to our visit there shortly!

Venue: The Blind Beggar, Atrium Center, Charilaou Trikoupi 6-10 Athens, Greece. For more information on INTRO visit : https://www.introshow.gr/

Paris, France: SILMO trade fair reconfirms for live show in September – an edition designed for ‘renewal and reunion’ of the entire industry

One of the optical industry’s key annual international events – which attracts a large number of international eyewear companies and a wide selection of independent brands and creative designers including young and emerging eyewear labels, looks set to take place in September 2021 – at the Parc des Expositions Paris Nord Villepinte. The fair organisers have stated in July that ‘nearly 500 companies from 32 countries have registered for the live event.’

Last year the regular event was unable to go ahead at the Paris Nord site owing to Covid restrictions and a smaller version of the show took place in central Paris and in some locations in France in an unprecendented change to the calendar and a ‘roadshow’ format entitled “Silmo hors Les Murs”. Above: SILMO 2019 at Parc des Expositions: a memorable occasion and the 25th anniversary of Silmo D’Or Awards: pre-Covid-19

The format of the 2021 fair will follow that of previous years prior to the pandemic, with special areas such as the SILMO NEXT space and the SILMO d’Or awards and presentation event. Comfort and safety will be at the top of the organisers’ agenda, with health protocols being observed and reinforced according to the French administrative authorities, although attendees will be able to explore the trade fair freely without making an appointment in advance – in an event that promises real hope as a driver of recovery and renewal for the sector at a global level.

The SILMO fair is due to take place on 24th to 27th September 2021. Eyestylist looks forward to meeting will friends, designers and sponsors in person once again during the event. (Contact us for further details or to share your updates and previews at clodagh@eyestylist.com).
